Today I pick up the restored Indo Bus. It is looking better than it ever has, including when it came off the factory line in Germany back in 1966! The Indo Bus is the icon of Indo Jax Surf School, Charities and our Team Rider Program. Its uniqueness exemplifies our uniqueness as a business, as a Team and as a learn to surf program. Indo Jax is going on its 11th year in business and simply put WE ARE THE BEST! We have the most skilled and trained instructors you can find anywhere. We use the safest and most effective techniques and equipment in the industry. We have a surf team that provides a coaching staff and video review practices at no cost to our competitive team riders. What a summer it was at Indo Jax Surf School and Charities! This year we were honored to be chosen for a TV series, The Hero Effect, that starts on November 12. Indo Jax Surf Charities will be highlighted in the 10th episode. Our episode will air in March or so. This Docuseries was created by Dolphin Digital and United Way International, choosing 10 charities throughout the United States to be part of this program. We were 1 of 10 charities in the nation to be chosen!
The film crew came out to our location at Wrightsville Beach a couple times to film our outreach camps. They filmed our Cancer Surf Camp and Visually Impaired Surf Camp and it was a real delight to have them on hand. The TV Hosts were Ex Pro Football Player Donald Driver of the Green Bay Packers and Actress Emily Wilson of General Hospital. The hosts participated, surfed and cheered on our Visually Impaired Surfers. In the end they announced the series will be airing on the Oprah Winfrey Network. Stay tuned for more information on our episode on The Hero Effect.
Indo Jax Surf School is many things…
We are a surf school with private surf lessons and surf camps for anyone who wants to learn to surf or just have a great time at the beach. We serve many kids and adults with our surf program and surf clinics at Wrightsville Beach and beyond. Our experience, skill, training and equipment make us simply the best choice for surf schools in the Cape Fear Region or anywhere in the world for that matter.
We are a surf club for local kids that want to keep surfing and become more advanced in their skills. Our surf club is an after school program that meets once a week for practice. While this is not a learn to surf program, kids who participate in the club progress from beginner all the way to advanced. Many start to compete in local surf competitions. The after school program is designed for parents who don’t surf or want their kids to be around coaches and other surfers. The cost for this program is much cheaper than our learn to surf programs since participants need fewer instructors and have their own equipment. Within the surf club program we have a Team Rider program, The Indo Jax Team. Once you get to this level, you are a competitor, an advanced surfer and working toward being an instructor for our surf school, eventually our surf charity. The Team Riders are our elite surfers, but they have to exude the charitable nature of Indo Jax. They must be of the mindset that they want to share surfing with others and help those that need it.
The program we are most proud of is our outreach program. With this program we serve those that are less fortunate than us. We use surfing to empower medically fragile, special needs and at risk youth. Within this program we offer mission trips to other countries such as India and Nicaragua to help children in third world regions. We hold camps for kids that are blind, orphaned, have autism, wounded warriors, children battling cancer, children with hearing impairments, inner city kids, the list goes on. Our outreach program is leading the charge in therapeutic recreation and our program is world renowned. We have been featured in many documentaries, magazines, and newscasts including American Way Magazine, TEDx Talks, etc and we have received many awards for our service to youth in our area and beyond.
Indo Jax is many things, but in all that we do we love to help people, have fun in the ocean, and surfing is our tool to do all of it!
I love this time of year. It’s that time of year where I reflect on all the things I am thankful for, and there are so many!
I am so blessed to have such a great wife and kids. We live in a wonderful house and have such a great family lifestyle. Our kids are doing great in their activities and school. Our youngest, Finn, is doing well in school and becoming an incredible martial artist with his Jiu Jitsu. Charlie our middle and adopted child has really assimilated into our family and has come a long way since he first arrived. He’s doing great in school, straight A’s and getting ready for basketball season. Gabby our oldest is doing well in school, also straight A’s, and going bananas in her surfing. She finished this year’s ESA season as a 2 Division Champion, first in Girls Shortboard and first in Boys/Girls Longboard. I am so proud of all the accomplishments of our kids. But more important than that, I am proud of how they give back. They have spent a lot of time helping those in need at our charity surf camps for kids with special needs. That seems to be what they’re most into and that makes me happy.
At this time of year I am so thankful for our friends. We have amazing friends that are doing amazing things in this world. We are blessed to have such fantastic people in our lives, it makes the holidays that much more special!
At Indo Jax we are grateful as well. As an organization, we have been blessed to be part of something really special. Our outreach surf program in Wrightsville Beach, NC has grown to a level we never dreamed of. Our charity surf program in India is in its 7th year, that’s almost unthinkable! Our surf school and surf camp program at Wrightsville Beach
has become the BEST you can find anywhere. We have been blessed with the most incredible staff of instructors. No where can you go to find more caring, attentive and skilled surf instructors! In 2015 I was invited to to a TEDx Talk in Knoxville Tennessee, and our program is now gracing the pages of American Way Magazine, located in every seat back such of American Airlines Flights.
So when I think of things, all the things in my life, I can only Thank God and be thankful. If it all ended today, it was an incredible ride. We have been a part of so many cool things, I can’t even imagine what could be next. We have become friends with so many great people that will always be a part of our lives. Even the struggles have been worth it, because they brought us here. Right here now, where we are so stoked to be, where we are so thankful.
I hope you all have a great holiday season. I hope you all are thankful too, and we hope to see you all soon in the water!
Jack, Family and Friends
On Saturday, Halloween, the Indo Jax Surf Team had its final competition of the ESA series. The Eastern Surfing Association, Southern North Carolina District started it’s season in March and held 6 contests along the Cape Fear Coast. Each competitor accumulates points by their placings and hopes to make the podium at the end of the year and be invited to Regionals that will be held in April of 2016. Indo Jax Surf School and Charities is a proud sponsor of the ESA and our Surf Team competes heavily in the local ESA events.
Our Surf Team surfers did fantastically. Most all made finals, many solidified podium spots for the end of the year banquet, and a couple earned enough points to qualify for regionals. I am so proud of how the Indo Jax Team Riders competed and feel strongly that we are poised to take over this area in competitive surfing, especially in the girls divisions. Official season point totals are yet to be posted, and we can’t wait to hear the official word. What’s even more impressive is that our team camaraderie and sportsmanship were outstanding, and showed me that our crew is a tight knit team of competitors.
Indo Jax Surf School is a learn to surf program located in Wrightsville Beach. We offer high quality surf camps and private surf lessons in the Wilmington area. Indo Jax Surf Charities is an outreach program for medically fragile, special needs and at risk youth. Indo Jax Surf Club is our after school surf program that serves kids that can already surf, but want to improve their surfing and possibly get involved in our charity and into competitive surfing. Indo Jax Team Riders is our program of sponsoring and promoting surfing at a high and competitive level.
At Indo Jax we have it all when it comes to surfing! Our surf instructors and surf coaches are second to none. If you want the best in surfing, come to Indo Jax!
While Indo Jax Surf School has also had a Surf Team for the past few years, we now also have a Surf Club. The Surf Team has grown into two separate entities. The original Surf Team is now called the Surf Club. The Surf Club is for children and adults who have taken our surf camps or lessons before and want to continue to surf and get better. Many of these surfers compete in contests, volunteer for our charity and travel abroad to surf. They are dedicated surfers. Our Surf Club is a platform for them to keep improving their surfing. There is a strong camaraderie among these surfers and they really enjoy surfing together, pushing each other and enjoying the beach environment. Many friendships have been forged and strong bonds created. The Surf Club while about getting better is also about fun! Having fun in the surf while getting better is the name of the Surf Club game. We are currently running our Fall Surf Club. It goes down of Fridays from 4:30-6 pm at Wrightsville Beach Access #10 Mallard Street. Participants need their own equipment. Cost for the season comes out to $20/session, 2016 prices are subject to change.
Our Surf Team is now our team Rider Program. Team Riders are usually Surf Club Members or coaches who are serious about competing. They represent Indo Jax Surf School and Indo Jax Surf Charities. At competitions we usually have a Team Tent where we help each other hang out and cheer each other on. There is no charge to be a Team Rider, but you need to be hand picked to be on the Team. Team Riders receive goody bags of Indo Jax swag and are given discounts on all Indo Jax Products and access to all our resources.
For both Surf Club Members and Team Riders, deep discounts are offered for our camps, lessons and coaching. Our goal in our Club and Team Rider Programs is that participants keep surfing, they support Indo Jax Surf School and Indo Jax Surf Charity, and they get more deeply involved in all the good things that surfing can bring.
As our 2014/2015 surf season comes to a close, I can’t help but to reflect back on the most amazing season we have had yet! It’s almost impossible to fathom the many accomplishments of our surf program. Our impact on the world through surfing is impressive to say the least!
Let me recount…
In October of 2014 we received a $30,000 grant from United Health Care for our incredible surf charity program. The grant which earmarked much of the money for equipment not only gave us a huge boost, but really showed us that surfing is a viable and effective program that helps medically fragile, special needs an at risk youth! Indo Jax is forging the way in impressive fashion on this front and it’s no wonder why we are simply the best choice when it comes to surf lessons or surf camps!
In November 2014 we held our first Indo Jax Surf Trip to Nicaragua. It was a spectacular surf trip for the 15 or so folks who went. Some got surf lessons, some got surf coaching, others just chilled, but ALL got first class accommodations, food, and excursions! It was world class and we head back in February 2016 can’t wait!
In February 2015 I gave a TED Talk at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. What an incredible experience it was. Unreal to think that our outreach program has become so popular that we are getting asked to speak at huge venues like TED!
In April we provided our 6th annual surf camp for orphans in India! No that’s not a misprint that the truth, 6 years in a row! When I think back to all it took to start and keep this program going, I am speechless. No one does what we do and we are proud of our accomplishments!
The summer of 2015 was the absolute best yet, in spite of all the sharks, we cranked through. Although our Oak Island program died, we grew in Topsail with our new location at Topsail Beach. We are the only choice for Topsail Beach surf Camps and Surf Lessons. The others simply can’t compete with our quality. Our surf camps, surf lessons and surf clinics in Wrightsville Beach grew to new incredible heights, that we only dreamed of a couple years ago. We are the only choice for Wrightsville Beach Surf Camps and Surf Lessons as well as our instructors, equipment, commitment to safety, attention to detail, and quality are unmatched. Simply put we are the best surf school money can buy.
Our charity surf camps in 2015 as well went bigger than we ever dreamed. Armed with new equipment and support our program hosted more kids than we ever had before and we were already serving tons of kids. The highlight of the summer was a huge event surrounding our Visually Impaired Surf Camp. Blind professional surfer Derek Rabelo and the niece of Helen Keller attended our camp and helped us host the party of the summer at Wrightsville Beach. We closed out the summer with our biggest Autism Surf Camp yet! I think we are the most incredible Charity Surf School on the planet.
Finally our Surf Team Program really came together this year, and provided a great stage for young surfers to improve, compete, travel and excel. Our Team Riders performed well and got great results in local competitions. While it is still evolving, our Surf Team Program is a force and we are looking forward to continuing on with it!
At Indo Jax we are on fire with some of the most incredible surf programs you’ll find anywhere. We are your best choice for surf lessons and surf camps in Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Beach, the Cape Fear Region, maybe worldwide.

We return on April 25th and then it’s ON!
Our Wilmington, NC private lessons and surf camps will then be getting underway. We are expecting record numbers this year as registrations have been pouring in already. Our staff is highly skilled, trained and certified and is unparalleled by the other surf programs in town. We put our heart and soul into our surf teaching program, and we hear it all the time, “Indo Jax is far superior to the others!”
Finally, our outreach surf program, Indo Jax Surf Charities, WOW, what can be said. This program is probably the finest there ever has been in the entire world. This year’s schedule is going to be the greatest charity surf camp schedule anyone has ever seen. With 12-15 Week Long Charity Surf Camps for medically fragile, at risk and special needs youth and young adults, we are the premier outreach surf program in the world, no doubt about it. No other surf program is capable of doing what we at Indo Jax can do. We serve the widest variety of special needs participants in the surf. Our camps are 3-5 days long giving participants the chance to really experience the exhilaration and uplifting qualities of the ocean and learning to surf. Our numbers are growing exponentially and we allow siblings to participate side by side with their brothers and sisters. An experience that is unmatched anywhere for these kids and young adults! Every penny we raise goes to serving more and more children! Our schedule is set and posted so please visit indojax.com to register for any of our surf camps, surf lessons, surf clinics, or outreach surf camps that suit you. There really is no other choice than Indo Jax!
Happy New Year!
We at Indo Jax Surf School hope you had a great holiday season and are off to a great 2015. We sure are here. The holidays are a great time to be with family and friends, reflect on the past year, and gear up for the new one. We did just that. As I looked over the past Indo Jax Year of surf lessons, surf clinics, surf camps and charity surf camps I can’t help but to be so grateful for such an outstanding and successful year. We served more children and adults than ever before. Our surf camps and outreach surf camps were maxed out, and we had the best staff of surf instructors ever. 2014 was the year of sponsorship too! So many great sponsors joined in to support our program. The Helen Keller Foundation, Eco Media, United Health Care, Alert Tile, Ogden Car Wash, First Bank to name but a few. It was clear to us in 2014 that we have become the Cape Fear Regions absolute best surf school, and that our charity surf school is world class. Families are literally coming from all over the country to participate in our high quality surf programs. We are honored to know that we are held in such high regard and that we attract so many people to our area for their vacations. We know that this helps the local economy as well as brings so much joy to the families we serve.
As we move into the 2015 surf season we are stoked to announce what’s new! First off We have a new Indo Jax truck. We are in the process of doing some work to the Indo Bus so you may notice some upgrades there. The new Tundra will help us carry more boards and instructors so that we can serve more children in our surf camps. We have a new format for our Topsail Beach Surf Camps, they will now run exactly like our Oak Island 1 day and 3 day surf camps. We have on-line registration for our charity surf program, in fact almost all new 2015 dates for our charity surf camps are posted on the charity surf page. All of our new surf camp dates for Wrightsville Beach, Oak Island and Topsail Beach are posted on the surf school page, and more folks than ever are already signing up for another great Indo Jax experience. So check out our website for new updates and news, join our FB page and stay current on the daily happenings.
We hope to see you in the water soon!!!
After an incredible 2014 Summer Surf Season for Indo Jax Surf School and Charities, we decided to hold a Reunion Surf Day on October 4th at our location in Wrightsville Beach NC. It was a roaring success. With perfect ocean conditions, warm air and water and over 60 of our outreach surf camp participants, WE RIPPED! Just about all of our 30+ instructors and another 20 volunteers were on hand, it was a day for the ages. It was also a day we celebrated a new two year partnership with United Health Care and their Do Good, Live Well Program.
2014 has been our best year by far, no doubt about it. Our morning and half day surf camps were maxed out all summer, and our charity surf camps grew to numbers we never thought possible. Our Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Island and Oak Island Programs all expanded. Our goal is, and always has been, to serve as many children as possible, this year exemplified why Indo Jax Surf School and Indo Jax Surf Charities are the premier “Learn to Surf ” Programs in the Cape Fear Region, maybe worldwide.
So many great moments from 2014…Sponsorship from the Helen Keller Foundation, 5th Annual Homes of Hope Surf Camp for orphan girls in India, 4th annual Surf Camp for the University of Tennessee Swim Team,, Bound By Sea purchased by a distributor and will be on Net Flix by the holidays, our visually impaired surf camp video made it into Cucalorus Film Festival 2014, receiving the Razor Walker Award and E-Town Awards, revitalizing our Wounded Warrior Program so more wounded vets can participate. It was truly an inspirational and incredible summer. We received so many new Camp Sponsorships that helped us crank out an unbelievable season, sponsorships from Ogden Car Wash, Northstar Group, Trot Nixon and Family, Synergy Medical, Alerttile, George C Foundation, Hope From Helen, Grass Monkey Holdings, First Bank and The Eye Care Center. Our partnerships with Homes of Hope, Surfers Healing, Mauli Ola, Boys and Girls Club, Boys and Girls Home of Waccammaw, and other non profits grew ever stronger. The Wrightsville Beach Wahine Surf Contest was another huge success with over 100 girls participating. We are stoked to head into 2015 and keep all this going! The biggest news of all though, was the new sponsorship from United Health Care. The grant we received from them will ensure we can continue to grow, continue to use the best equipment, continue to hire the best staff, and continue empowering medically fragile, special needs and at risk youth through our amazing surf program. Thank you all for your support in 2014!
And it’s not over! The Indo Jax Surf Team program is posting the biggest numbers we’ve ever seen with over 20 kids joining us every Friday to take their surfing to the next level. These kids are ripping, even when it’s big, competing in contests, and volunteering for our charity surf camps and clinics. The Fall Surf Team Program culminates with a trip to Nicaragua. With a full house of 11 surfers and their families, we will be whooping in up at Rancho Santana to experience some exotic waves in warm water this November.
See you in the water!
