Great Things in October and Halloween
Recently many great things have taken place for Indo Jax Surf School and Charities. Our Pennies 4 Pins was a huge success, even more than we expected with nearly $45,000 raised. We never imagined we could break the record we set last year and if collections go well, we smash it! The Star News put out a fantastic article of our Norway surfing adventure, highlighting Gabriella and her travels around the globe to help needy children in all four oceans. We were a nominee for the Chase Giving Program, didn’t win, but were so honored to be involved. And most recently we were a finalist in the Verizon Technology Innovation Awards that took place in Raleigh last week. There was great feedback about our surf school and surf camps in Wrightsville Beach and Topsail Island. Out of 75 + applicants, we were one of 12 finalist, and one of 6 that were mentioned. Again we didn’t win, but made a great showing and it appears we turned some heads with our work with special needs children. All these great things tell us we are on the right track with our work, that’s exciting for us!
Over the weekend we had the great pleasure and honor to have Rupert Isaacson, of the Horse Boy Foundation and Movie, visit us in Wilmington to discuss future plans to work together providing horse/surf camps for children. Our 2012 pilot camps in Half Moon Bay and Wrightsville Beach went fantastic and we have started to map out a program to improve and grow these surf and horse programs next year. It’s especially rewarding to learn more about how to help more children in new and better ways. Plans are in the works to go back out to Texas to participate in more trainings and to formalize and improve our surf programs and surf lessons. For 2013 these combo horse/surf camps will be on our schedule.
Although our surf camps and surf lessons have wound down, our surf team in Wrightsville Beach is going strong and will continue for a few more weeks. The kids in this program are really improving and showing that consistent practice makes a huge difference. These little rippers are getting very independent in the water and learning some advance skills in the water.
We are entering our off season right now. This is the time where we start to plan our programs for next year’s surf camps and pump up our fundraising efforts for the upcoming charity season. It’s nice to take a step back and put ideas into action for next year.
We hope you all have a great Halloween tomorrow. Please be safe and enjoy!
