Thankful

Tuesday, December 1st, 2015

I love this time of year.  It’s that time of year where I reflect on all the things I am thankful for, and there are so many!

I am so blessed to have such a great wife and kids.  We live in a wonderful house and have such a great family lifestyle.  Our kids are doing great in their activities and school.  Our youngest, Finn, is doing well in school and becoming an incredible martial artist with his Jiu Jitsu.  Charlie our middle and adopted child has really assimilated into our family and has come a long way since he first arrived.  He’s doing great in school, straight A’s and getting ready for basketball season.   Gabby our oldest is doing well in school, also straight A’s, and going bananas in her surfing.  She finished this year’s ESA season as a 2 Division Champion, first in Girls Shortboard and first in Boys/Girls Longboard.  I am so proud of all the accomplishments of our kids.  But more important than that, I am proud of how they give back.  They have spent a lot of time helping those in need at our charity surf camps for kids with special needs.  That seems to be what they’re most into and that makes me happy.

At this time of year I am so thankful for our friends.  We have amazing friends that are doing amazing things in this world.  We are blessed to have such fantastic people in our lives, it makes the holidays that much more special!
At Indo Jax we are grateful as well.  As an organization, we have been blessed to be part of something really special.  Our outreach surf program in Wrightsville Beach, NC  has grown to a level we never dreamed of.  Our charity surf program in India is in its 7th year, that’s almost unthinkable!  Our surf school and surf camp program at Wrightsville Beach
has become the BEST you can find anywhere.  We have been blessed with the most incredible staff of instructors.  No where can you go to find more caring, attentive and skilled surf instructors!  In 2015 I was invited to to a TEDx Talk in Knoxville Tennessee, and our program is now gracing the pages of American Way Magazine, located in every seat back such of American Airlines Flights.

So when I think of things, all the things in my life, I can only Thank God and be thankful.  If it all ended today, it was an incredible ride.  We have been a part of so many cool things, I can’t even imagine what could be next.  We have become friends with so many great people that will always be a part of our lives.  Even the struggles have been worth it, because they brought us here.  Right here now, where we are so stoked to be, where we are so thankful.

I hope you all have a great holiday season.  I hope you all are thankful too, and we hope to see you all soon in the water!

Reunion Surf Day a Huge Success

Friday, October 24th, 2014

After an incredible 2014 Summer Surf Season for Indo Jax Surf School and Charities, we decided to hold a Reunion Surf Day on October 4th at our location in Wrightsville Beach NC.  It was a roaring success.  With perfect ocean conditions, warm air and water and over 60 of our outreach surf camp participants, WE RIPPED!  Just about all of our 30+ instructors and another 20 volunteers were on hand, it was a day for the ages.  It was also a day we celebrated a new two year partnership with United Health Care and their Do Good, Live Well Program.

2014 has been our best year by far, no doubt about it.  Our morning and half day surf camps were maxed out all summer, and our charity surf camps grew to numbers we never thought possible.  Our Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Island and Oak Island Programs all expanded.   Our goal is, and always has been, to serve as many children as possible, this year exemplified why Indo Jax Surf School and Indo Jax Surf Charities are the premier “Learn to Surf ” Programs in the Cape Fear Region, maybe worldwide.

So many great moments from 2014…Sponsorship from the Helen Keller Foundation, 5th Annual Homes of Hope Surf Camp for orphan girls in India, 4th annual Surf Camp for the University of Tennessee Swim Team,, Bound By Sea purchased by a distributor and will be on Net Flix by the holidays, our visually impaired surf camp video made it into Cucalorus Film Festival 2014, receiving the Razor Walker Award and E-Town Awards, revitalizing our Wounded Warrior Program so more wounded vets can participate.  It was truly an inspirational and incredible summer.   We received so many new Camp Sponsorships that helped us crank out an unbelievable season, sponsorships from Ogden Car Wash, Northstar Group, Trot Nixon and Family,  Synergy Medical,  Alerttile, George C Foundation, Hope From Helen, Grass Monkey Holdings, First Bank and The Eye Care Center.  Our partnerships with Homes of Hope, Surfers Healing, Mauli Ola, Boys and Girls Club, Boys and Girls Home of Waccammaw, and other non profits grew ever stronger.  The Wrightsville Beach Wahine Surf Contest was another huge success with over 100 girls participating.  We are stoked to head into 2015 and keep all this going!  The biggest news of all though, was the new sponsorship from United Health Care.  The grant we received from them will ensure we can continue to grow, continue to use the best equipment, continue to hire the best staff, and continue empowering medically fragile, special needs and at risk youth through our amazing surf program. Thank you all for your support in 2014!

And it’s not over!  The Indo Jax Surf Team program is posting the biggest numbers we’ve ever seen with over 20 kids joining us every Friday to take their surfing to the next level.  These kids are ripping, even when it’s big, competing in contests, and volunteering for our charity surf camps and clinics.  The Fall Surf Team Program culminates with a trip to Nicaragua.  With a full house of 11 surfers and their families, we will be whooping in up at Rancho Santana to experience some exotic waves in warm water this November.

See you in the water!

Pennies 4 Pins 2014

Friday, March 7th, 2014

Two days left and we bowl.  We bowl to raise money for our charity surf program that serves literally thousands of medically fragile, special needs and at-risk youth.  This program empowers and uplifts children and gives them a sense that if…”I can do this, I can do anything!”  Children and families walk away from these camps knowing their future holds fantastic things and that they don’t need to be discouraged by their circumstance, they just need to go for it!  Our charity schedule is impressive to say the least and 2014 is looking to be one of the biggest ones yet, check this out!…

This has got to be the only place in the world for all these children to get a chance to surf!  We also allow sibling to surf side by side with their brothers and sisters.  They rarely if ever get to participate together  but at Indo Jax Surf Charities they do!  So please, give us a hand, throw a few pennies our way and we’ll do some serious good with it!
Thank you!

Cozumel Surfing and the Flowrider

Monday, February 3rd, 2014

We all just returned from a great family vacation and have reopened the Indo Jax offices.  It was great to get away for a week and we had a blast!  For the first time asa family we went to Disney World.  The crowds were very low and we enjoyed both the Magic Kingdom and the Animal Kingdom Parks.  From there we headed to the coast and went on a 7 day Caribbean Cruise with our good friends the Forts.  It was incredible!  The ship, “The Freedom of the Seas” was fantastic and it had so many cool things including the flow rider.  The food and service were absolutely awesome.  We had some fantastic shore excursions as well and Gabby and I even found some surfboards and a local guide, “Nacho” to take us out for a few great waves.  All in all, it was a wonderful vacation!

I am stoked however, to be back in the office and gearing up for our 2014 surf camps, surf lessons, and charity surf camps and clinics.  This year is already looking like an all time year!  With quite a few sign ups already for private surf lessons, morning and half day surf camps we are looking to expand.  Although our Wrightsville Beach surf programs are always at capacity, we are gearing to expand, our Topsail Island Surf Program and Oak Island Surf Program.  As well our charity program is definitely getting more interest than ever.  With just about every instructor returning, Indo Jax Surf School and Charities is looking stronger than ever in terms of our staff. I am so proud and honored to be able to work with our crew of incredible instructors, that keep our surf camps, surf lessons and charity surf events fun and safe!  Our sponsorships are improving as well.  This year we already have sponsors for our Belarus Surf Camp (Synergy Medical), our Visually Impaired and Hearing Impaired Surf Camps (Alerttile and Helen Keller Foundation), and our Boys and Girls Home of Waccammaw (Trott Nixon and Family).  Right now everything is open so feel free to register via our website’s registration page or call/email me with any questions.

In other exciting news, Bound By Sea is up for Best Local Independent Film in Encore Magazine’s The Best of Wilmington.  Also, I just found out that I am a finalist for the Razor Walker Award through UNCW’ education department.  I am so honored and stoked!  We have a couple fundraisers coming up…Feb 8th at Michael’s Seafood Restaurant in Carolina Beach and March 9th our annual Pennies 4 Pins Bowling Fundraiser.

We hope to see you all in the water!

Happy New Year 2013/2014

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

DSC_0282_editIndo Jax Surf School and Indo Jax Surf Charities would like to wish all of our customers, supporters, family and friends a Very Happy New Year.  We have had a fantastic season and are really looking forward to an even better 2014.  We would like to thank all of our volunteers, surf instructors, donors, and supporters for helping us have such a successful 2013.  We are so grateful for all of our blessings, here are a few…

1. To be members of the incredible Wrightsville Beach Surf Community.

2.  To be able to work with so many children and adults through our surf programs, surf camps and surf lessons.

3.  For our incredible staff of surf instructors

4.  For our volunteers, donors and supporters of our charity surf program.

5.  for our partnerships with other organizations

Thank you all for being part of Indo Jax.

In 2013 we served a record number of children in our surf programs.  It’s hard to even fathom where we are today considering where we started.  Over the years we have no doubt experienced our share of ups and downs.  Even 2013 saw some bumps in the road.  Nevertheless we just keep getting better!  Our program of surf camps, charity surf camps, surf lessons and affiliate surf programs are some of the best in the Cape Fear Region if not anywhere  in the world.  Our surf instructors are some of the best anywhere I’ve seen, allowing us to provide some of the best surf lessons and camps money can buy!  Our programs at Wrightsville Beach, Oak Island and Topsail Island have grown steadily over the years.  Our reputation in the Wilmington Area is second to none.

We look forward to our 2014 outreach surf camp season and what it brings.  This next season is already looking brighter than ever.  Our Belarus Surf Clinic is already funded.  We have a commitment form AlertTile and The Helen Keller Foundation to sponsor both our Visually Impaired and Hearing Impaired Surf Camps for the next 3 years.  Along with The Eye Care Center that program sponsorship is stronger than ever.  We have a commitment from the Nixon Family to sponsor a new program, a surf camp for the Boys and Girls Home of Waccammaw.  And we should hear soon from a couple of other committed donors on our surf camps for autism and juvenile diabetes.  Currently we are gearing up for our 5th India Surf Safari for Orphan Girls in April to kick off our 2014 surf camp season.

We are also really looking forward to our 7th year in business in the Wilmington Area, with our high quality morning surf/ beach camps and lessons for 2014.  With new and better equipment on the way and 95% of our staff returning our surf camps and surf lessons this year are going to be awesome!  The movie Bound By Sea premiered at Thalian Hall in Wilmington and was well received, we are excited to see where it goes from here.  The Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic made a comeback this year and was a huge success.  Jo Pickett of Crystal South Surf Camp and Indo Jax Surf School worked together to make this happen, and it was an honor to work with Jo on this surf competition.  We look forward to a continued relationship with The Surf Club, Surfers Healing, The Mauli Ola Foundation, University of Tennessee, Rip Curl and many others.  It really is amazing the friends we’ve made and affiliates we have that have contributed to the quality and success of our surf program.

All in all 2013 was fantastic year for both our charity surf program and surf camp program.  We are extremely grateful for the opportunities we’ve had.  Here’s to an even better 2014!

Jack

University of Tennessee Swim Team Surf Camp/BBQ

Tuesday, October 1st, 2013

The University of Tennessee Surf Camp and BBQ was a fantastic time this year.  We had some pumping surf and 60 world class swimmers on hand for a 4 day surf camp at Wrightsville Beach.  The swimmers and Indo Jax Surf School instructors had a great time and caught some great waves.  The BBQ at the end of the camp was fun as well.  We got to mingle with the swimmers and coaches, share some laughs and watch one of Indo Jax Surf Charities latest videos “My Name Uncle.”  This was our 3rd year working with Matt Kredich and his Volunteer Swim Team.  The Vols have become family and we really enjoy having them at our Surf School and our house to share great times.  We wish them well as they embark on their 2013/14  Swim Season.

My Name Uncle was well received by the Volunteer swimmers.  This documentary by Matt Batchelor highlights our 4 year ongoing program in India for orphans.  It will be playing at Cucalorus this year, so if you haven’t seen it come on out.  In addition to My Name Uncle, Bound By Sea will be making it’s world premier at Cucalorus this year.  This film highlights our charity surf programs around the world as well as right here in the Wilmington/ Cape Fear region. 1209205_10201304694714062_180509993_n We hope to see you there.

2013 Off Season is Here!

Monday, September 9th, 2013

Today really felt like the off season had arrived.  I dropped the kids off at school and headed to the beach to surf.  There was hardly anyone at the beach, the waves were glassy and nice, and the weather was perfect.  I wasn’t rushed, just got a chance to enjoy the day.  With no lessons for the first day in 4 months, I got a chance to surf myself.  And surf I did!  I surfed my short board for awhile, but switched to the long board as the tide rose.  Then once the tide had gotten a hold of it, I pulled out the hand plane and body surfed.  It was a fantastic morning!  For the next 8 months or so, this will be the story of Indo Jax Surf School.  We are still running weekend surf camps/clinics, private  surf lessons and our surf team, but the relaxing days of the off season are here!

Today gave me the chance to reflect on 2013.  What a year it was here at Indo Jax Surf School and Charities.  We kicked off the Charity Surf Camp Season with our annual Surf Safari to India.  This year we served nearly 100 orphan girls and introduced them to the wonderful sport of surfing.  Once home we dove into our Wrightsville Beach Charity Surf Program.  This year we posted the biggest numbers at our surf camps for medically fragile, special needs and at risk youth in our 7 year history.  It was a truly amazing summer of charity.  It never gets old watching these children catch their first waves and beam with joy and  and a boosted self esteem.  Our top notch surf instructors are phenomenal working with kids with special needs and they never cease to amaze at the way they work with children and change their lives for the better.  Time and time again they gave each child that came through our charity surf program the “best days of their lives!”

Our Surf School Programs grew to new heights as well.  Our surf camp in Wrightsville Beach was packed week in and week out, but our incredible staff of instructors kept the surf camps and surf lessons going strong through August. Our program in Oak Island really boomed after a so so season last year.  The new format we implemented worked really well and the numbers reflected a program that’s booming in Oak Island.  The efficiency and dedication of our fantastic surf instructors kept that program going full tilt through August.  Our Topsail Island Surf Camps and Surf Lessons (our newest location) also grew this year.  Our staff of highly skilled and trained instructors took on the biggest summer in our history with tons of energy and positive spirit.  From early June through August, our team was tireless and worked non-stop to make our surf program the best in the Cape Fear/Wilmington Region.  Our 2013 instructor team was by far the best Indo Jax has ever seen.  I’m stoked to know that year in and year out we attract the best surf instructors you can find anywhere.  I’m proud to be a part of this awesome crew.

Our Surf Instructor of the Year was Shane Wall.  Shane is a 3rd year employee who developed our surf team, worked every charity camp this summer, and along with Matt V held down the Oak Island Surf Camp program.  90% of our staff was returners while a small 10% was new.  Our new crew members rocked as well, catching on quickly and putting their heart and soul into all aspects of our surf program.

We hope you all have a great off season too and hope to see you next year for more surfing fun!

Although we at Indo Jax are tired from an incredible summer packed full with surf camps, surf lessons, and charity surf camps, we can’t help but to look forward to 2014.  It’s hard to imagine but I bet it will be even better!

India Surf Safari 4, Varkala Here We Come!

Friday, April 12th, 2013

IMG_20130411_145206We are just a week away from embarking on our 4th trip to India to serve orphan girls.  The journey we have experienced in building this program has been one of the most wonderful in my life.  It has been filled with adventure, trials, failures and massive success.  Dedication, determination and an absolute refusal to quit have marked our attitude throughout this journey and are the reasons we are still going back.

When we started this program, the first year was brutal.  Neither the instructors nor the organization I was with at the time have ventured back.  All gave up.  Myself and Paul Wilkes were determined to not give up.  I knew what we offer these girls was important to them and I didn’t want to ever give up on them.  Once I met Jeff Murtha, he had the same resolve as Paul and  I did and we kept the program alive and growing.  The work it takes to pull this off is mind boggling…fundraising, equipment inventory, donations of needed supplies, logistics.  It’s unbelievable but we are headed into our 4th year and serving 5 times the number of girls on two coastlines out of 4 different orphanages.  Not bad for a program we almost didn’t believe was even possible.  Programs like ours come and go, they die off in a year, like the instructors I took the first year.  Indo Jax though has heart!  We are dedicated, determined and we absolutely refuse to give up on these girls.

Filming for the story about the India adventure started yesterday.  We’re planning an incredible documentary about the history of the India Surf Safari!  I think it’s going to be fantastic.  Matt Batchelor the director started his interviews with Jeff, Paul and I.  We’ll have  a showing sometime in June.

On Tuesday April 16th there will be a bon voyage party at all three Ruby Tuesday Restaurants in Wilmington.  We will receive 20% of the sales.  This will be one of our last Western Meals in awhile too!  Please come out and celebrate with us Tuesday at Ruby Tuesday!

Thanks!
