The Many Facets of Indo Jax

Monday, February 29th, 2016

Indo Jax Surf School is many things…

We are a surf school with private surf lessons and surf camps for anyone who wants to learn to surf or just have a great time at the beach.  We serve many kids and adults with our surf program and surf clinics at Wrightsville Beach and beyond.  Our experience, skill, training and equipment make us simply the best choice for surf schools in the Cape Fear Region or anywhere in the world for that matter.

We are a surf club for local kids that want to keep surfing and become more advanced in their skills.  Our surf club is an after school program that meets once a week for practice.  While this is not a learn to surf program, kids who participate in the club progress from beginner all the way to advanced.  Many start to compete in local surf competitions.  The after school program is designed for parents who don’t surf or want their kids to be around coaches and other surfers.  The cost for this program is much cheaper than our learn to surf programs since participants need fewer instructors and have their own equipment.  Within the surf club program we have a Team Rider program, The Indo Jax Team.  Once you get to this level, you are a competitor, an advanced surfer and working toward being an instructor for our surf school, eventually our surf charity.  The Team Riders are our elite surfers, but they have to exude the charitable nature of Indo Jax.  They must be of the mindset that they want to share surfing with others and help those that need it.

The program we are most proud of is our outreach program.  With this program we serve those that are less fortunate than us.  We use surfing to empower medically fragile, special needs and at risk youth.  Within this program we offer mission trips to other countries such as India and Nicaragua to help children in third world regions.  We hold camps for kids that are blind, orphaned, have autism, wounded warriors, children battling cancer, children with hearing impairments, inner city kids, the list goes on.  Our outreach program is leading the charge in therapeutic recreation and our program is world renowned.  We have been featured in many documentaries, magazines, and newscasts including American Way Magazine, TEDx Talks, etc and we have received many awards for our service to youth in our area and beyond.

Indo Jax is many things, but in all that we do we love to help people, have fun in the ocean, and surfing is our tool to do all of it!IMG_4186 (1)

ESA Surf Competition Season Comes to a Close

Monday, November 2nd, 2015

On Saturday, Halloween, the Indo Jax Surf Team had its final competition of the ESA series.  The Eastern Surfing Association, Southern North Carolina District started it’s season in March and held 6 contests along the Cape Fear Coast.  Each competitor accumulates points by their placings and hopes to make the podium at the end of the year and be invited to Regionals that will be held in April of 2016.  Indo Jax Surf School and Charities is a proud sponsor of the ESA and our Surf Team competes heavily in the local ESA events.

Our Surf Team surfers did fantastically.  Most all made finals, many solidified podium spots for the end of the year banquet, and a couple earned enough points to qualify for regionals.  I am so proud of how the Indo Jax Team Riders competed and feel strongly that we are poised to take over this area in competitive surfing, especially in the girls divisions.  Official season point totals are yet to be posted, and we can’t wait to hear the official word.  What’s even more impressive is that our team camaraderie and sportsmanship were outstanding, and showed me that our crew is a tight knit team of competitors.

Indo Jax Surf School is a learn to surf program located in Wrightsville Beach.  We offer high quality surf camps and private surf lessons in the Wilmington area.  Indo Jax Surf Charities is an outreach program for medically fragile, special needs and at risk youth.  Indo Jax Surf Club is our after school surf program that serves kids that can already surf, but want to improve their surfing and possibly get involved in our charity and into competitive surfing.  Indo Jax Team Riders is our program of sponsoring and promoting surfing at a high and competitive level.

At Indo Jax we have it all when it comes to surfing!  Our surf instructors and surf coaches are second to none.  If you want the best in surfing, come to Indo Jax!

2015 Surf Season—A Huge Success!

Sunday, September 6th, 2015

As our 2014/2015 surf season comes to a close, I can’t help but to reflect back on the most amazing season we have had yet!  It’s almost impossible to fathom the many accomplishments of our surf program.  Our impact on the world through surfing is impressive to say the least!

Let me recount…

In October of 2014 we received a $30,000 grant from United Health Care for our incredible surf charity program.  The grant which earmarked much of the money for equipment not only gave us a huge boost, but really showed us that surfing is a viable and effective program that helps medically fragile, special needs an at risk youth!  Indo Jax is forging the way in impressive fashion on this front and it’s no wonder why we are simply the best choice when it comes to surf lessons or surf camps!

In November 2014 we held our first Indo Jax Surf Trip to Nicaragua.  It was a spectacular surf trip for the 15 or so folks who went.  Some got surf lessons, some got surf coaching, others just chilled, but ALL got first class accommodations, food, and excursions!  It was world class and we head back in February 2016 can’t wait!

In February 2015 I gave a TED Talk at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.  What an incredible experience it was.  Unreal to think that our outreach program has become so popular that we are getting asked to speak at huge venues like TED!

In April we provided our 6th annual surf camp for orphans in India!  No that’s not a misprint that the truth, 6 years in a row!  When I think back to all it took to start and keep this program going, I am speechless.  No one does what we do and we are proud of our accomplishments!

The summer of 2015 was the absolute best yet, in spite of all the sharks, we cranked through.  Although our Oak Island program died, we grew in Topsail with our new location at Topsail Beach. We are the only choice for Topsail Beach surf Camps and Surf Lessons.  The others simply can’t compete with our quality.   Our surf camps, surf lessons and surf clinics in Wrightsville Beach grew to new incredible heights, that we only dreamed of a couple years ago.  We are the only choice  for Wrightsville Beach Surf Camps and Surf Lessons as well as our instructors, equipment, commitment to safety, attention to detail, and quality are unmatched.  Simply put we are the best surf school money can buy.

Our charity surf camps in 2015 as well went bigger than we ever dreamed.  Armed with new equipment and support our program hosted more kids than we ever had before and we were already serving tons of kids.  The highlight of the summer was a huge event surrounding our Visually Impaired Surf Camp.  Blind professional surfer Derek Rabelo and  the niece of Helen Keller attended our camp and helped us host the party of the summer at Wrightsville Beach.  We closed out the summer with our biggest Autism Surf Camp yet!  I think we are the most incredible Charity Surf School on the planet.

Finally our Surf Team Program really came together this year, and  provided a great stage for young surfers to improve, compete, travel and excel.  Our Team Riders performed well and got great results in local competitions.  While it is still evolving, our Surf Team Program is a force and we are looking forward to continuing on with it!

At Indo Jax we are on fire with some of the most incredible surf programs you’ll find anywhere.  We are your best choice for surf lessons and surf camps in Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Beach, the Cape Fear Region, maybe worldwide.IMG_2931

Reunion Surf Day a Huge Success

Friday, October 24th, 2014

After an incredible 2014 Summer Surf Season for Indo Jax Surf School and Charities, we decided to hold a Reunion Surf Day on October 4th at our location in Wrightsville Beach NC.  It was a roaring success.  With perfect ocean conditions, warm air and water and over 60 of our outreach surf camp participants, WE RIPPED!  Just about all of our 30+ instructors and another 20 volunteers were on hand, it was a day for the ages.  It was also a day we celebrated a new two year partnership with United Health Care and their Do Good, Live Well Program.

2014 has been our best year by far, no doubt about it.  Our morning and half day surf camps were maxed out all summer, and our charity surf camps grew to numbers we never thought possible.  Our Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Island and Oak Island Programs all expanded.   Our goal is, and always has been, to serve as many children as possible, this year exemplified why Indo Jax Surf School and Indo Jax Surf Charities are the premier “Learn to Surf ” Programs in the Cape Fear Region, maybe worldwide.

So many great moments from 2014…Sponsorship from the Helen Keller Foundation, 5th Annual Homes of Hope Surf Camp for orphan girls in India, 4th annual Surf Camp for the University of Tennessee Swim Team,, Bound By Sea purchased by a distributor and will be on Net Flix by the holidays, our visually impaired surf camp video made it into Cucalorus Film Festival 2014, receiving the Razor Walker Award and E-Town Awards, revitalizing our Wounded Warrior Program so more wounded vets can participate.  It was truly an inspirational and incredible summer.   We received so many new Camp Sponsorships that helped us crank out an unbelievable season, sponsorships from Ogden Car Wash, Northstar Group, Trot Nixon and Family,  Synergy Medical,  Alerttile, George C Foundation, Hope From Helen, Grass Monkey Holdings, First Bank and The Eye Care Center.  Our partnerships with Homes of Hope, Surfers Healing, Mauli Ola, Boys and Girls Club, Boys and Girls Home of Waccammaw, and other non profits grew ever stronger.  The Wrightsville Beach Wahine Surf Contest was another huge success with over 100 girls participating.  We are stoked to head into 2015 and keep all this going!  The biggest news of all though, was the new sponsorship from United Health Care.  The grant we received from them will ensure we can continue to grow, continue to use the best equipment, continue to hire the best staff, and continue empowering medically fragile, special needs and at risk youth through our amazing surf program. Thank you all for your support in 2014!

And it’s not over!  The Indo Jax Surf Team program is posting the biggest numbers we’ve ever seen with over 20 kids joining us every Friday to take their surfing to the next level.  These kids are ripping, even when it’s big, competing in contests, and volunteering for our charity surf camps and clinics.  The Fall Surf Team Program culminates with a trip to Nicaragua.  With a full house of 11 surfers and their families, we will be whooping in up at Rancho Santana to experience some exotic waves in warm water this November.

See you in the water!

Jack

Happy New Year 2013/2014

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

DSC_0282_editIndo Jax Surf School and Indo Jax Surf Charities would like to wish all of our customers, supporters, family and friends a Very Happy New Year.  We have had a fantastic season and are really looking forward to an even better 2014.  We would like to thank all of our volunteers, surf instructors, donors, and supporters for helping us have such a successful 2013.  We are so grateful for all of our blessings, here are a few…

1. To be members of the incredible Wrightsville Beach Surf Community.

2.  To be able to work with so many children and adults through our surf programs, surf camps and surf lessons.

3.  For our incredible staff of surf instructors

4.  For our volunteers, donors and supporters of our charity surf program.

5.  for our partnerships with other organizations

Thank you all for being part of Indo Jax.

In 2013 we served a record number of children in our surf programs.  It’s hard to even fathom where we are today considering where we started.  Over the years we have no doubt experienced our share of ups and downs.  Even 2013 saw some bumps in the road.  Nevertheless we just keep getting better!  Our program of surf camps, charity surf camps, surf lessons and affiliate surf programs are some of the best in the Cape Fear Region if not anywhere  in the world.  Our surf instructors are some of the best anywhere I’ve seen, allowing us to provide some of the best surf lessons and camps money can buy!  Our programs at Wrightsville Beach, Oak Island and Topsail Island have grown steadily over the years.  Our reputation in the Wilmington Area is second to none.

We look forward to our 2014 outreach surf camp season and what it brings.  This next season is already looking brighter than ever.  Our Belarus Surf Clinic is already funded.  We have a commitment form AlertTile and The Helen Keller Foundation to sponsor both our Visually Impaired and Hearing Impaired Surf Camps for the next 3 years.  Along with The Eye Care Center that program sponsorship is stronger than ever.  We have a commitment from the Nixon Family to sponsor a new program, a surf camp for the Boys and Girls Home of Waccammaw.  And we should hear soon from a couple of other committed donors on our surf camps for autism and juvenile diabetes.  Currently we are gearing up for our 5th India Surf Safari for Orphan Girls in April to kick off our 2014 surf camp season.

We are also really looking forward to our 7th year in business in the Wilmington Area, with our high quality morning surf/ beach camps and lessons for 2014.  With new and better equipment on the way and 95% of our staff returning our surf camps and surf lessons this year are going to be awesome!  The movie Bound By Sea premiered at Thalian Hall in Wilmington and was well received, we are excited to see where it goes from here.  The Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic made a comeback this year and was a huge success.  Jo Pickett of Crystal South Surf Camp and Indo Jax Surf School worked together to make this happen, and it was an honor to work with Jo on this surf competition.  We look forward to a continued relationship with The Surf Club, Surfers Healing, The Mauli Ola Foundation, University of Tennessee, Rip Curl and many others.  It really is amazing the friends we’ve made and affiliates we have that have contributed to the quality and success of our surf program.

All in all 2013 was fantastic year for both our charity surf program and surf camp program.  We are extremely grateful for the opportunities we’ve had.  Here’s to an even better 2014!

University of Tennessee Swim Team Annual Surf Camp at Indo Jax

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

So stoked that we are gearing up for the 3rd Annual University of Tennessee Swim Team Surf Camp at Indo Jax Surf School.  Next week 60 world class athletes will be converging on Wilmington NC to train, compete and surf ,YES SURF!  Indo Jax Surf School is honored to be hosting these swimmers at Wrightsville Beach for 4 days of surfing in between training sessions and competition.  Both the men’s and women’s swim team will be here along with coach and good friend Matt Kredich and his incredible staff of coaches and trainers.  All of our surf instructors are pumped for this event.IMG_0869

This surf camp is one of my favorite events of the year.  Working with athletes of this calibur is an incredible experience, and it’s amazing to see how quickly they’re up and riding.  Being so comfortable in the ocean, makes learning to surf easy.  It seems most in this group quickly progress from total beginner to intermediate in a few tries.  It isn’t long before they are catching their own waves, paddling into bigger and steeper waves, and generally doing thing you don’t see from beginners.

The swimmers will be competing agains the University of North Carolina Wilmington swim Team while here.  The event will culminate with a BBQ at our house.  Last year’s event was a great time and we look forward to hosting them for another surf event!
