The Many Facets of Indo Jax

Monday, February 29th, 2016

Indo Jax Surf School is many things…

We are a surf school with private surf lessons and surf camps for anyone who wants to learn to surf or just have a great time at the beach.  We serve many kids and adults with our surf program and surf clinics at Wrightsville Beach and beyond.  Our experience, skill, training and equipment make us simply the best choice for surf schools in the Cape Fear Region or anywhere in the world for that matter.

We are a surf club for local kids that want to keep surfing and become more advanced in their skills.  Our surf club is an after school program that meets once a week for practice.  While this is not a learn to surf program, kids who participate in the club progress from beginner all the way to advanced.  Many start to compete in local surf competitions.  The after school program is designed for parents who don’t surf or want their kids to be around coaches and other surfers.  The cost for this program is much cheaper than our learn to surf programs since participants need fewer instructors and have their own equipment.  Within the surf club program we have a Team Rider program, The Indo Jax Team.  Once you get to this level, you are a competitor, an advanced surfer and working toward being an instructor for our surf school, eventually our surf charity.  The Team Riders are our elite surfers, but they have to exude the charitable nature of Indo Jax.  They must be of the mindset that they want to share surfing with others and help those that need it.

The program we are most proud of is our outreach program.  With this program we serve those that are less fortunate than us.  We use surfing to empower medically fragile, special needs and at risk youth.  Within this program we offer mission trips to other countries such as India and Nicaragua to help children in third world regions.  We hold camps for kids that are blind, orphaned, have autism, wounded warriors, children battling cancer, children with hearing impairments, inner city kids, the list goes on.  Our outreach program is leading the charge in therapeutic recreation and our program is world renowned.  We have been featured in many documentaries, magazines, and newscasts including American Way Magazine, TEDx Talks, etc and we have received many awards for our service to youth in our area and beyond.

Indo Jax is many things, but in all that we do we love to help people, have fun in the ocean, and surfing is our tool to do all of it!IMG_4186 (1)

2015 Surf Season—A Huge Success!

Sunday, September 6th, 2015

As our 2014/2015 surf season comes to a close, I can’t help but to reflect back on the most amazing season we have had yet!  It’s almost impossible to fathom the many accomplishments of our surf program.  Our impact on the world through surfing is impressive to say the least!

Let me recount…

In October of 2014 we received a $30,000 grant from United Health Care for our incredible surf charity program.  The grant which earmarked much of the money for equipment not only gave us a huge boost, but really showed us that surfing is a viable and effective program that helps medically fragile, special needs an at risk youth!  Indo Jax is forging the way in impressive fashion on this front and it’s no wonder why we are simply the best choice when it comes to surf lessons or surf camps!

In November 2014 we held our first Indo Jax Surf Trip to Nicaragua.  It was a spectacular surf trip for the 15 or so folks who went.  Some got surf lessons, some got surf coaching, others just chilled, but ALL got first class accommodations, food, and excursions!  It was world class and we head back in February 2016 can’t wait!

In February 2015 I gave a TED Talk at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.  What an incredible experience it was.  Unreal to think that our outreach program has become so popular that we are getting asked to speak at huge venues like TED!

In April we provided our 6th annual surf camp for orphans in India!  No that’s not a misprint that the truth, 6 years in a row!  When I think back to all it took to start and keep this program going, I am speechless.  No one does what we do and we are proud of our accomplishments!

The summer of 2015 was the absolute best yet, in spite of all the sharks, we cranked through.  Although our Oak Island program died, we grew in Topsail with our new location at Topsail Beach. We are the only choice for Topsail Beach surf Camps and Surf Lessons.  The others simply can’t compete with our quality.   Our surf camps, surf lessons and surf clinics in Wrightsville Beach grew to new incredible heights, that we only dreamed of a couple years ago.  We are the only choice  for Wrightsville Beach Surf Camps and Surf Lessons as well as our instructors, equipment, commitment to safety, attention to detail, and quality are unmatched.  Simply put we are the best surf school money can buy.

Our charity surf camps in 2015 as well went bigger than we ever dreamed.  Armed with new equipment and support our program hosted more kids than we ever had before and we were already serving tons of kids.  The highlight of the summer was a huge event surrounding our Visually Impaired Surf Camp.  Blind professional surfer Derek Rabelo and  the niece of Helen Keller attended our camp and helped us host the party of the summer at Wrightsville Beach.  We closed out the summer with our biggest Autism Surf Camp yet!  I think we are the most incredible Charity Surf School on the planet.

Finally our Surf Team Program really came together this year, and  provided a great stage for young surfers to improve, compete, travel and excel.  Our Team Riders performed well and got great results in local competitions.  While it is still evolving, our Surf Team Program is a force and we are looking forward to continuing on with it!

At Indo Jax we are on fire with some of the most incredible surf programs you’ll find anywhere.  We are your best choice for surf lessons and surf camps in Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Beach, the Cape Fear Region, maybe worldwide.IMG_2931

2014 Razor Walker Award

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014

Indo Jax is proud to announce that owner of Indo Jax Surf School and President of its charity program, Jack Viorel,  will be awarded the 2014 Razor Walker Award this year by the UNCW Watson School of Education. This award goes to people in our community that walk the “Razor’s Edge” when it comes to helping the children of North Carolina.  Jack was a teacher for 20 years, before retiring to run his North Carolina based surf school and charity full time.  His last 5 years of teaching were in NC  at St Mary School in downtown Wilmington.  It was during his years at St Mary that he won the prestigious Lewis Award for Teaching Excellence.  Jack also founded Indo Jax Surf School and Charities in 2007.  Since starting Indo Jax his surf school and charity surf program has grown to what it is today.  An outreach surfing program that serves thousands of children every year with FREE surf camps and surf clinics for medically fragile, special needs and at risk youth. The program is based in wilmington and mostly works with children in the Cape Fear Region but runs surf camps abroad as well.   Over the years these surf camps have served wounded warriors, children with AIDS, Boys and Girls Clubs, orphans in India, children with autism, Burmese refugees, Visually Impaired children, Hearing Impaired Children, children with Juvenile Diabetes, children with cerebral palsy, to name some.  In 2012, a documentary called Bound By Sea was made of Indo Jax’s worldwide program to help children.  It was during that year, that Jack and his then 9 year old daughter, traveled to all 4 oceans (including the Arctic) to serve some of the neediest children in the world with their surf program.  On May 1st, Jack will be presented with this award at UNCW.  To learn more about their program that operates in Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Island, and Oak Island, visit their web-site at www.indojax.com.Autism
