Special Olympics Surf Event Day 1

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Our first day went great.  We had tons of volunteers and some great athletes.  Always inspiring when someone tries something that is so new to them.  We had everything from Knee riding and muscle flexing to a great victory dance on the beach.  Truly inspirational we can  all learn something from that kind of enthusiasm.  Day 2 will be tomorrow at access #4 from 4-7, let’s hope for continued warm weather and fun waves.

SPRING!!!!!!

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Well today I truly felt like I am making a difference. First of all it didn’t take 5 minutes to fill up three bags it took aboutan hour.  Thats great!  I am able to walk distances of 20- 30 yards before I have to stop and pick up some trash.  But the thing that warmed up my heart the most was seeing a very large osprey or possibly a bald eagle fly off a branch as I turned a corner and glide over the river with a fish in his talons.  Then I stopped and watched quietly and observed baby egrets and comorants practicing fishing.  Where I used to only see Koa and my footprints I saw footprints of Great blue herrings, raccoons, an lot’s of marsh crabs and they were all on clean river banks!  Maybe just maybe they are returning to this area because I have cleaned it for them.  I hope I am making a diference in their lives.  Koa on the other hand chased all the ducks around and had a ball!

The Crowds are Back

A lot of people say it’s tourist season and that’s why our beaches end up so polluted during the spring and summer.  Those same people give off a negative vibe and say we don’t need tourists to keep our local economies strong.   Well I strongly disagree with these comments, tourism is one of the most important aspects to our economic growth.  And to all those who say tourists are the biggest polluters of our beaches, I say to you what have you done lately to clean them, and if you see someone leave trash behind do you go pick it up or do you just complain.  I believe it is all our fault and we all need to take responsibility and help to clean!  Wether you are from New York and visiting or you were born and raised here.  I hope you are all doing well and I hope I get to meet some of you this summer.  Kevin
