Helping Others

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Indo Jax has a strong commitment to helping those in need.  We believe our oceans and their energy give us spirit, happiness, and life.  We hope to educate about conservation and protection of our ocean and it’s inhabitants.  Using our clean oceans we believe we can make a difference in everyones lives no matter their ability or dissability.  Please join us for a lesson in love and healing using our oceans as a tool to uplift spirit and happiness.

A Couple of New Photos

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

I just received a couple of new photos from our 2008 summer.  I thought I’d post them since they are great.  I’d also like to thank all of those who are donating to the Indo Jax Trash Challenge, keep up the good work.  From Kevin’s posts, it’s clear we all need to pitch in or we are going to drown in our own trash.  Chris from Local Sessions and SOD Surfboards have donated a free surf board, Indo Jax is offering a free weeklong surf camp, Mellow Mushroom is throwing in some pizza prizes.

I would also like thank Tony B from WBlivesurf for donating to our charity surf camps this summer.  We are going to be putting on somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 free surf camps for the needy, so we really appreciate the help.

Thanks everyone!

Jack

Reusable Grocery Bags/ Recycling

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

A quick look at why I am using reusable bags now.  As I have said before about 90% of what I find is recycable, so this is what a couple of days work looks like.  All bags are filled to the brim, I sort them out and then recycle.  The green bin is the normal city issued recycle bin and the blue tub is an extra bin I bought to accomodate all the recycling.  I am pretty sure my trash collectors think I am crazy.  Everyone keep up the good work!  Kevin

P.S. The recycle bins were empty before I added the contents of the bags!

Save the Sea Turtles

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I am sure many of you know that certain sea turtle species love to eat jelly fish.  Unfortunatley plastic bags floating in the ocean look like a Jelly fish.  Each year Turtles injest this plastic and end up very ill or dead.  The lucky few get rescued and make it to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital where they are treated rehabilitated and hopefully released back to the wild.  Therefore I focused my cleaning on plastic bags, and it didn’t take long to fill up the bags as always fortunately I was able to cover about a mile and a half and I feel like I got a good amount of the plastic.  Unfortunately it was very windy and I am sure therE is a lot of plastic blowing into the ocean and river.  So please remember next time you see a plastic bag blowing around a yard, a parking lot, a beach, or anywhere try to pick it up and recycle it at a grocery store.  I hope everyone is doing well.  Xavier Rudd has a very powerfull cover of MY Own Eyes on his myspace page.  Check it out, it may just motivate you.  THERE ARE A COUPLE OF CUS WORDS THAT HE SINGS OUT OF FRUSTRATION WITH OUR DESTRUCTION OF THE ENVIROMENT, SO PLEASE BE AWARE.

Caper Fear River

Caper Fear River

Thank You

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

I wanted to start with a big thanks to Dimitri Brown who joined me on my hike today and filmed it. Soon I am hoping to have the video posted, so you can see what I see.  Well I picked up my usual 3 bags.  The last couple days I was able to get 4 bags but the wind was very difficult to deal with today.  An idea I have is to get a pontoon boat to follow me on the river so I can get 100 bags, so if anyone knows someone with a pontoon boat who is interested please let me know.  Next thing I wanted to talk about briefly is the affect industry seems to have on our wildlife.  Obviously we could debate about this for hours.  All I am going to say is we have to put limits on it.  I support Stopping Titan Cement.  Yes there is the argument that it will boost our economy, but we have to have limits and this needs to be a benchmark.  Stopping Titan says that we will put our land, water and children in front of a minor economy boost.  Although most people will say Titan does not have a major affect on the land and we haven’t said no to other industries, well we need to start, or else other highly polluting industries are going to come in and use the excuse that we allowed Titan and they should be allowed. So where do we say NO!  We say it now to Titan and we say yes to preserving our wetlands and our water, and we start to help the earth heal.  Hope everyone is doing well and please keep doing your part!  Kevin

Remember: This is our home it is all of our rights, we share this land with each other and the animals.

My Own Eyes

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Well I have seen with my own eyes what we are doing to our land, and it’s not good.  Over this week I collected 20 bags of trash, as always most of it is reycable.  This morning I filled up three bags in less than 10 minutes, so I decided to put the bags down and continue following the river and get my dog Koa some exercise.  I followed the river a couple of miles until I arrived at a bay cut into the river, as I came around the corner I saw tons of birds, pelicans and comorants flying around and it was beautiful.  Then I looked down at my feet, I was standing on the high tide line and every where I looked were plastic bottles and plastic bags.  It was heart beaking.    Someone once said that if every one picked up an additional three pieces of trash  it would make a huge difference.  Well with what I have seen I think if every one picked up an additional 3BAGS of trash we might be able to make a dent, and make the world a more beautiful place.  I hope everyone is out there doing their part and I will keep doing mine.  Thank you to everyone!  Kevin

It’s On!

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

The 2009 season is underway.  We had our first lesson of the season Friday Feb. 6th on a beautiful but cold afternoon.  Ava braved the cold and caught a ton of waves in her new wetsuit, booties, hood and gloves.  Who says you can’t do surf lessons in the winter? She was awesome! The next day was the Wilmington Parent Camp Fair.  What a great turn out!  I was amazed at how many people have heard about our programs and especially our charity work.  We had tons of interest in our spring and summer surf programs, but even more exciting was the interest shown in our new kiteboarding program.  Dave, our kiteboarding director was on hand to tell everyone about this new program we’re offering and he’s pumped to get it going!  All in all it was a great weekend for us and we are really looking forward to the spring, summer, and fall.

Xavier Rudd – Messages

So now come sit down
Will you talk with me now
Let me see through your eyes
Where there is so much light
We are biding our time
For these myths to unwind
For these changes we will confront

So please beware
With every place that you had
Look to your soul
For these things that you know
For the trees that we see
Can not forever breathe
With the changes they will confront

CHORUS:
You know some people they just won’t understand
no I just won’t understand
These things
Thank you for your message but I don’t understand
no I just won’t understand
These things

For this sacred land
It has seen many hands
It has wealth and gold
Yet it is fragile and old
And all the greedy souls
Just don’t care to know
Of the changes it will confront

So speak out loud
Of the things you are proud
And if you love this coast
Then keep it clean as it hopes
‘Cause the way that it shines
May just dwindle with time
With the changes it will confront
