Charity Updates

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Indo Jax and some of its instructors are in the middle of “Mustaches For Kids,” and we are having a great time.  I’m not sure how much money has been raised by our guys, but I’ll post it when  it’s over.  I do know this, this crew can grow some sweet staches!  Drew, Nick, Kevin, Dave H, and myself have all been sportin’ the new style.  I’ll try and post a photo soon.  The donations for this event go to the “Make a Wish Foundation” so it’s a great cause.

World AIDS Day is coming up Dec. 1st.  It will be celebrated at 4:30 at the UNCW athletic fields.  This is a day to raise awareness for those suffering from this terrible disease.  As most of you know, Indo Jax gives free surf camps for children born with HIV, and so these kids hold a special place in our hearts.   Check out the photos from our charity surf camps for children with HIV on the gallery page.  We also have a slide show posted with music from Xavier Rudd who gave us special permission to use his music for our HIV Surf Camp Slideshow.

Feel free to call or e-mail us if you have any questions about “Mustaches for Kids” or “World AIDS Day”, and please show your support for the charity we’re doing.

Thanks!

Jack

Costco Revolution

Friday, November 7th, 2008

It is here.  The day when you can go to the supermarket and buy a 100$ surfboard.  The world of surfing is forever changed.  Well, yes and no.  It is true you can go to your local Costco or Sam’s Club and you can buy a very low cost surfboard.  But there is still a lot you need to know before jumping on a board and riding a wave.  We are not against low cost surfboards, believe me, we just want to make sure people stay safe in the water.

Surfboards have historically been shaped and glassed by one or two people.  Often a mentor and an apprentice.  That is still done today.  We at Indo Jax give tribute to this wonderful tradition.  In fact as I speak to you today my magical board, the best board I have ever ridden was recently hand shaped for me by John Reinhard from Uhuru surfcraft.  (Thank’s Jack you can’t imagine what a gift like that means).  Why is this board so magical, because John new my height, my weight, how I like to surf, and what type of waves I generally surf–Wallah a magical board.  Chances are the CEO’s at Costco haven’t been going around and taking national averages of everyone’s weight and height to make the magical board.  Here in Wilmington, NC we are lucky that there are a good number of very talented shapers out there.  Greg Eavey, Dave Yearwood, Will Allison, and AJW just to name a few.

What Indo Jax is saying is, put some time and thought into your surfboard purchase.  Please call us and ask questions.  We are here to help.  If this is your first time surfing or you are still a beginner please take a lesson, surfing can be a dangerous sport.  You should understand swell period, wave height, currents, surf etiquette, wildlife, etc.  If you are saying to yourself huh… on any of those then you should be contacting a local surf school (Indo Jax!!!) to find out how to safely get into our ocean and be a success.

Don’t forget Christmas is right around the corner and Indo Jax has a large selection of beginner to intermediate boards for sale, at low costs!

Coming in 2009: Wrightsville Beach Division / Kiteboard School

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

We are stoked to announce that Starting April 1, 2009 Indo Jax will be opening a Wrightsville Beach Division for our Surf School!  Last season our Carolina Beach Surf Classes were jam packed we had to turn people away.  Also, we had many inquiries about Wrightsville Beach Classes.  So to better accomodate our customers, and to teach more people,  we will be holding our surf classes in both Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach.  We hope this serves our customers even better than last season.  In both locations we will have an AM session and hold Private Lessons.  In addition we have increased our plans for our Charity Surf Camps from the 6 weeks we did last year to 10 weeks for the 2009 season.  We will be giving free week long  Surf Classes to medically fragile children, including those with HIV/AIDS, Autism, Cerebal Palsy, and Diabetes.  Our charity camps were so successful last year, we are excited about what’s to come for 2009 and we can’t wait to get started!

In addition to the New Wrightsville Beach Division, we will be opening up a Kiteboard Division.  One of our outstanding surf instructors, Dave Houck, will be heading up this department.  Dave is a great surfer, kiteboarder and  surf instructor.  When the idea came up to add kiteboarding to the list of things Indo Jax does, Dave was our guy!

We are still ironing out all the details of the school, but we are committed to putting it all together, and we think it will be every bit as successful as the surf school.  We look forward to kicking off the 2009 Kiteboard School.

Stay tuned for more postings on these additions to Indo Jax.  Also please check out the web-site.  We have more media coverage and tons more photos in the gallery.  The Indo Jax On- Line Store is in the works as well and should be up and running soon!  Also our 2009 schedule is being posted as we work it out so keep checking back for those details.
